After two years in the grave South Florida’s festival comes back to life! That was the news that Langerado announced earlier this year to much delight of Florida’s music lovers. Since Langerado was canceled in 2009, there have not been any suitable replacement other than few shows from artists nice enough to finish their summer tours in this part of the country. The festival is perhaps the biggest question in the world of music festivals. How will it be? Will it last? Will history repeat itself? Is South Florida really worth of having a music festival? can we handle it? All these questions will be answered with time and with, hopefully, all the support from the music fans.
This year the festival is going back to Markham Park in Sunrise, Florida on October 8th and 9th. There are several interesting bands in the line up, such as, indie favorites Death Cab for Cutie, Brooklyn’s Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and from the other side of the pond, Arctic Monkeys. As a music fan, all I hope is that people do show up, that all of us, together, show organizers and bands that we truly deserve to have a music festival and that we can make it grow and make Langerado as big as its sister festivals Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits.

You can buy tickets on their website.

Here is what the whole line up looks like:

Death Cab For Cutie ~ Trey Anastasio Band ~ Ben Harper ~ Ween ~ Thievery Corporation ~ Arctic Monkeys ~ G. Love & Special Sauce ~ Clap Your Hands Say Yeah ~ Wolfgang Gartner ~ The Glitch Mob ~ Ghostland Observatory ~ Das Racist ~ Etienne De Crecy – Live Show ~ Portugal. The Man ~ Friendly Fires ~ Childish Gambino ~ Super Mash Bros. ~ Conspirator ~ SAVOY ~ Mates of State ~ Smith Westerns ~ The Whigs ~ Yuck ~ Metropolis (Live) ~ Keys N Krates ~ Two Fresh ~ RAC DJs ~ Lance Herbstrong ~ HOTTUB ~ Bobby Lee Rodgers ~ The Kingston Springs

Soyprensa’s adventure to cover the world famous Jazz Fest in New Orleans began as soon as we stepped out of the airplane that took us from Florida to Louisiana. Not knowing much about the city of New Orleans, other than that it had been hit by one of the worst natural disasters in recent history, we weren’t quite sure what to expect. One of the first things we found at the Louis Armstrong Airport, probably the coolest name an airport can have, was a huge painting of Armstrong playing among some of the other jazz greats such as Fats Domino and Thelonious Monk. The sight of this work of art showed us how this city perceives the art of music. Coming from a town where our home musicians are Latin pop-stars whose music is continuously looped through soap operas, this kind of respect was overwhelming and beautifully appropriate.

We got there on Thursday, May 5th, and tried to immediately make our way to the festival-I didn’t want to miss Lucinda Williams, who was scheduled to perform at 1:40 pm. By the time that we dropped off our bags and registered at the press tent, it was already 2. It was very discouraging to see all the people leaving the stage where Williams was supposed to be playing until 2:55. Forgetting that Louisiana is an hour behind Florida time, I erroneously concluded that she finished her set halfway through and that my chance was gone. With that feeling of a bad start, we went for a walk and ended up at the Gentilly Stage on the other side of the park. On that stage, halfway through their set, we found the local band The New Orleans Bingo! Show. With faces full of makeup, beautiful dancers, and great music, they made a fan of me almost instantly. I immediately picked up a copy of their latest album when they were finished. Next stop was the Original Royal Players Brass Band at the People’s Health Economy Hall Stage. This was a very traditional act. As the band played on the stage we saw several men in suits weaving their way through the tent and pulling up people to dance in the ever-growing line snaking its way through the tables and chairs scattered throughout the tent.

Our next move was to go and check out Galactic. As a general rule, I am not a big fan of jam bands. I usually find them boring and repetitive, however, Galactic put on a great show and pumped the crowd up to see the headliner, Wilco. Wilco took the Stage at 5:20 and played for close to two hours. Frontman Jeff Tweedy was in a good mood as he joked about the background of the stage (the silhouette of a group of people dancing), made fun of their drummer (saying that he was the only one who wanted to play You Never Know, simply because the song starts off with the drums), and playing a lot of their legendary album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Further highlights of the show included a sing-a-long rendition of Jesus Etc., a rousing tribute to New Orleans through Hoodoo Voodoo, and a stellar set-closer with Heavy Metal Drummer.

On Saturday, our second day in New Orleans, and first day with the correct time, we decided to do typical tourist things in the morning before leisurely making our way back to the festival. We opted for 11 am drinks in the French Quarter and watched a great band, The Smoking Time Jazz Club, perform in the street. This little ensemble played without microphones or light shows, but easily rivaled many of the official Jazz Fest acts and ended up being one of my favorite performances of the whole weekend. Accompanied only by their instruments and a couple dancing (I fell in love with the female dancer), they drew a big crowd that sat quietly listening to their music and watching the show.

Stimulated by the spectacular street performances, we arrived at the festival with our spirits high, thanks in part to alcohol and in part to the beauty of the city. The first thing we did was grab a beer and head back to the Gentilly Stage to check out country music’s Jamey Johnson. With wild hair that made him looked more like a roadie for White Zombie and less like a guitar hero of country music, he dazzled the audience and put on a really great show. Johnson finished his set around 5 pm, but we had already left to catch the last twenty minutes of the local boys Better Than Ezra. Better Than Ezra has been kicking around for some years and I’ve seen them on festival lineups before, but never quite made it over to check them out. I was grateful that we decided to catch the end of their show because I really liked what I heard. With a sound very much in between indie and mainstream, the Louisiana band had people dancing and singing along. After they were done, the crowd stayed put and began to increase in volume. The reason for this was that the Grammy award winners Arcade Fire were schedule to perform next. The Canadian band took the stage at 5:35 pm on the dot and, as now is customary, opened the show with the aptly named Ready to Start. After that, it was an hour of complete bliss as the band played their way through their catalog. After the crowd exploded with Rebellion (Lies) the band left the stage for a few minutes only to come back with a special guest, Cindy Lauper. The surprise guest was well-received by the audience as they went into an Arcade Fire-ish rendition of Lauper’s infamous Girls Just Wanna Have Fun followed by Sprawl. After they thanked the pop legend, lead singer Win Butler led the band to close the show the best way they know how, playing the now timeless Wake Up, and sent us home with a rejuvenated love for them.

We finished our trip filled up with great food and delicious drinks from unparalleled bars. We met the nicest locals and enjoyed conversations with some of the most pleasant and charming people we’ve had the pleasure of getting to know in a long time. We had the great fortune of seeing fantastic local bands performing for tourists and locals alike, and we even got to meet some of them. All in all, we had a great time at the festival and roaming around the city. This is a festival that everyone who loves music can go and enjoy, one that goes hand in hand with the city’s spirit of love, respect and protection of their heritage and music in general.

MGMT, Avett Brothers, Sublime with Rome, Jason Mraz and many others gave life to the Sunfest in West Palm Beach this year. The festival was set in the very picturesque bay in West palm Beach. Soyprensa’s adventure at Sunfest consisted in two days in the festival, opening day and Saturday that featured the ubber-hipster MGMT.

The first day of the festival took place from 5 in the afternoon to 10:30 at night. Our first stop was to check out the reggae band The Supervillians. The band took the stage a little passed 7 PM, and consisted in six surfers playing a Ska-ish reggae, in other words, the perfect band to play in that stage before Sublime. After a while of this, we decided to go to the “Tire Kingdom Stage” (No kidding, that was the real name) to see the very excellent Avett Brothers. Now, I have to say something about this band, all of us here at Soyprensa are huge fans of this bluegrassy/folkish/punkish ensemble, so don’t judge us if we’re biased. The North Carolina band took the stage around 8:15 PM and from the beginning had the crowd in the palm of their hand. After an hour and a half of beautiful melodies, aggressive Banjo and pure energy, the Brothers left us wanting more and wishing for their speedy return to Florida.

To end the night, we decided to check out Sublime. Rome (The new singer) sings and plays very similar to the late Bradley Nowell, and the band seemed to enjoy playing in front of an audience again. Here’s the thing about Sublime, they sound outdated. This may be due to the fact that after their success so many bands tried to emulate their sound, some succeeded at this, and this made their once original sound become some how generic, and it showed on this show.

The second day arrived with grey skies. The probability of rain was high, and that is a dangerous thing for a family festival such as the Sunfest. Luckily it was just the clouds and no water. The first band of the day was the indie rock band Steel Train. The band from New Jersey performed for a little over an hour, and their garage guitars and folk influence was the perfect sound for all hipsters and scenesters that were getting to the grounds for the MGMT show. After Steel Train left the stage it was MGMT’s turn. People went crazy when they started playing, and the band reciprocated that energy. The band played for an hour and a half and pleased the audience with all their hits, psychedelic sounds and a impromptu race by the barricades that separated the crowd and the stage. It was very obvious that the band from Connecticut enjoyed their time playing here and gave their all.

All in all, the festival brought a great crowd, erasing the lines between demographics thanks in part to it’s eclectic line up, in part to the lack of shows coming to this part of the country during summer, but most of all, thanks to bringing artists that people wanted to see. It’s unfair to compare this year’s festival to last year’s. A lot has happened since, people are not so afraid to spend some money; I’m not so mad about the Flaming Lips cancelling at the last minute (that happened last year) or maybe it was just a better line up for my taste in music.

All we can hope for is that Sunfest keeps up the good job and that the revival of Langerado becomes a healthy competition of bringing the best music possible to South Florida.

Diego Dazza

Some pics of the festival, enjoy!

The fourth annual Outside Lands Music & Arts festival returns to San Francisco’s historic Golden Gate Park this year from August 12-14. Previously lionized as “two days of genre-and generation-crossing music (plus chicken and waffles,” Outside Lands is a surefire way to keep your summer grooving with a genre-bending and exciting musical
lineup. With Muse and Phish headlining alongside Grammy-dominating Arcade Fire, Outside Lands is certain to be comprehensive and exhilarating event. An action-packed and jovial event, Outside Lands is once again bringing together a diversified musical lineup that features new, relatively unknowns alongside living legends like John Fogerty and Mavis Staples. Other household names on the billing include The Black Keys, Deadmau5, MGMT, The Decembrists, Girl Talk, Erykah Badu, and The Roots. A huge new addition to the festival lineup, The Strokes are scheduled to appear in their first live appearance since 2009.

After exploding onto the festival milieu with a star-studded program in 2008 (Radiohead, Beck, Tom Petty), Outside Lands returned with another stellar schedule in 2009 (Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, Tenacious D). The festival downsized in 2010 to a two-day affair, but is coming back strong in 2011 with a return to three days of delicious food, fine wine, eco-awareness, and a first-rate musical lineup. Diligently working to become a lovable and revered addition to San Francisco over the past three years, portions of every ticket sold to Outside Lands benefits the San Francisco’s Recreation and Park Department.

As complement to the musical merriment, the festival’s Taste of the Bay Area once again welcomes local restaurants purveying their top-selling treats, and the festival’s famous Wine Lands returns again, a glorious tent filled with wine cask tabletops and samples from some of California’s finest vineyards. Festivalgoers can sip their
full-bodied reds as they navigate the Festival Marketplace, which is back for 2011 and boasting some of the best shopping west of the Sierra Nevada. The Festival Marketplace is chock full of quality craftsmen, artisans, vendors, and official festival merchandise. Outside Lands is also welcoming back its Eco Lands. Eco Lands is the tangible representation of the festival’s sustainability mission and commitment to environmental conservation and carbon footprint reduction. The festival encourages recycling, composting, biking and boasts a solar-powered Panhandle Stage and farmer’s market. Ever environmentally conscious, Outside Lands is offering a refillable water program as well as valet bike parking and urban gardening workshops.

Three-day and VIP passes are available on the festival’s website, and range in price from $199.50-$450.00. At the time of this writing, there are only limited Regular and VIP tickets available.
