Pink Martini: Fechas en España

Nos acabamos de enterar de casualidad (Bendito sea Facebook) que nuestros engreídos Pink Martini, estarán en España presentando su nueva producción Splendor in The Grass como parte de su gira Europea. Ya les hemos visto 2 veces, y son geniales en directo. Eventos como este no pueden pasar desapercibidos, y hacemos mención de la productora Pasion Turca, que trae en esta oportunidad traen a los americanos y que nos da la oportunidad de escuchar a estos pedazos de músicos, la voz encantadora de China Forbes, y el inconfundible piano de Thomas Lauderdale.

PASION TURCA presenta PINK MARTINI 2 únicos conciertos MADRID – 27 de julio – Teatro Lope de Vega BARCELONA – 28 de julio – L\’Auditori Los próximos 27 y 28 de julio, en el marco de su gira europea, el grupo norteamericano llegará al Teatro Lope de Vega de Madrid y a L´Auditori de Barcelona para presentar en directo su último trabajo: “Splendor in the grass”. Hace 15 años en su ciudad de origen, Portland, Oregon, Thomas Lauderdale trabajaba en política, pensando que algún día se presentaría a alcalde de su ciudad. Al igual que otros políticos en gestación, acudía a absolutamente todos los mítines políticos allá donde fuese, acabando horrorizado por la música que se escuchaba en ellos, sin ninguna belleza, apagada, demasiado estridente y nada atractiva. Obteniendo inspiración de cada rincón del planeta – mezclando géneros procedentes de la música clásica, el jazz y el pop de los inicios – y esperando atraer tanto a liberales como a conservadores, fundó en 1994 la “pequeña orquesta” Pink Martini, con el fin de proporcionar más bellas y atractivas bandas sonoras a las causas políticas progresistas como los derechos civiles, la vivienda accesible, la preservación del medio ambiente, la educación, etc. En 2010 PINK MARTINI lleva ya cuatro discos en el mercado internacional, con más de 2 millones de copias vendidas y conciertos en los mejores teatros del mundo.

En colaboración con Public Television, la banda filmó y editó un DVD en 2009 bajo el título, Discover The World. SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS El disco que vienen a presentar certifica el espíritu global y acogedor de todas las culturas. Conformado por nueve canciones originales y cuatro versiones (con canciones en inglés, napolitano, italiano, francés y español), Splendor In The Grass se grabó en la ciudad natal de la banda en Portland, Oregon y está producido por su líder y pianista, Thomas Lauderdaledale y el siempre presente y talismán, Alex Marashian — compañero de Thomas en la universidad – y la cantante, China Forbes. El disco cuenta con las colaboraciones de Chavela Vargas, Emilio Delgado, Ari Shapiro y Courtney Taylor-Taylor.

FIZ 2010 – X Festival de Música Independiente de Zaragoza

Caramelos de Cianuro en España: Fechas y +

Caramalos de Cianuro, la banda venezolana que ha cosechado ya varios exitos en su carrera visita España en Julio, el día 3 estarán en Madrid en el Orange Café y el 9 en la Sala Bikini de Barcelona, conocida ya por la talla de los artistas que presentan. Como ellos mismos describen en su biografía, la agrupación es “considerada por algunos la agrupación sobreviviente y triunfadora que resucitó de los turbulentos años noventa del rock nacional.” Con letras provocadoras y directos surreales, Caramelos de Cianuro promete un show imperdible, y por eso Soy Prensa quiere que llevarte a como de lugar. La historia más venenosa del rock venezolano llega a Barcelona como parte de su gira por Europa, este mes de julio Caramelos de Cianuro estará en sala Bikini para brindar al público un show memorable …

Es una banda conocida en Venezuela y sus alrededores, pero desde hace ya algún tiempo vienen metiendose en el mercado Español con la fuerza de una propuesta musical roquera alternativa. Caramelos de Cianuro desde su éxito “el martillo”, ha sufrido una metamorfósis tanto de sus integrantes como de su música siendo esta la propuesta única del rock en Venezuela o la mas conocida, su disco MIS MUJERZUELA les dio mucho que aprender como banda y crecer como artistas, desde entonces han tenido una carrera en ascenso, ahora cuentan con 5 placas y un compilado de sus mejores éxitos grabado en VIVO que incluye un DVD.

El pasado 11 de junio lanzaron a nivel mundial el single “Rubia Sol, Morena Luna”, es el primero de los 11 tracks que incluye el nuevo material discográfico de Caramelos de Cianuro, quienes advierten que vienen cargados de sorpresas y letras con las que muchos se sentirán identificados.

Con tales antecedentes, la consagrada banda revoltosa y eléctica nacida en 1991, llega acompañada de sus populares e irreverentes temas por segunda vez a Europa, esta vez confirmando la visita el sábado 03 de julio a Madrid, el lunes 05 en Milano y por primera vez el jueves 09 en SALA BIKINI de Barcelona, recinto por excelencia donde se han presentando atistas de la talla de Cerati.

En este show los Caramelos de Cianuro estarán acompañados por LUZ VERDE, agrupación Venezolana radicada en BCN que servirán de teloneros y estarán para demostrar que el buen rock y la rudeza son su sello personal con éxito garantizado.

Festival Cruilla en Barcelona!

Se viene la tercera edición del Festival Cruilla en el Parc Forum de Barcelona el próximo 16 y 17 de Julio, y como ya nos tienen acostumbrados, hay un line up que tiene algo para todos los gustos (gustos buenos, claro está). Sólo basta mencionar las cabezas del festival: Macaco, Alpha Blondy y Ben Harper (si, Ben Harper). Los precios son anticrisis, los dos días por 68 Euros (60 si las compraste antes del 15 de Mayo), si hacemos cuentas, con tanta música y buena onda, vale la pena. Así que si no te vas de vacaciones este verano, gastatelo todo en los festivales, que siempre puedes fardar con tus amigos de haber visto unos directos irrepetibles!

Shonen Knife en Barcelona

Shonen Knife, una de las bandas mas representativas el punk japonés, visitó España como parte de su gira Europea, en la que presentaron su último disco Supergroup. La banda compuesta por Naoko Yamano (voz), Ritsuko Taneda (bajo) y Emi Morimoto (batería) ha ido cambiando su alineación original con el pasar de los años. De hecho Emi es la ultima incorporación, después de que Etsuko (batería) abandonara la banda hace menos de un mes. Hace 17 años que Shonen Knife no pisaba territorio Español y no desilucionaron al público que se dió cita en la Sala BeCool de Barcelona para escucharlas interpretar sus viejos y nuevos éxitos.

Las puertas de la sala BeCool abrieron a las 9 y los madrileños Jugoplastika fueron los encargados de telonear al trío femenino, a ellos no les conocíamos tanto y sólo pudimos escuchar los últimos dos temas de su set, pero la verdad es que vale la pena investigarlos, encontramos el myspace de la banda y su web oficial, ahí se los dejamos como deberes. Las Shonen Knife subieron al escenario sobre las 10 y media, pero antes de eso las veíamos en chandal vendiendo sus discos y prometiendo firma de autógrafos y fotos al concluir el show que duró sobre las 2 horas.

Empezaron el concierto al ritmo de twist barbie, y luego de agradecer en Español a los presentes, dijeron que habían comido la mejor lasagna (creemos que quisieron decir paella), en fin…con todo su encanto dijeron que la lasagna de España era la mejor, y el público encantado, aplaudió sin ofenderse. Naoko, aficionada al Tennis, aprovechó para felicitar a Rafa Nadal por su triunfo en el torneo de Madrid. Poco a poco los asistentes se fueron soltando y cuando empezo a sonar banana chips estaban entregados, gritando sin parar arigato al final de cada tema.

Quienes estabamos cerca del escenario, mirabamos intrigados y encantados el setlist del concierto, escrito en japonés, y al terminar el show a mas de uno le faltó el tiempo para avalanzarse y atesorar para siempre el recuerdo de un concierto que esperamos no tarde 17 años en repetirse, las Shonen Knife tienen mucha fuerza, carisma y talento, merecían mas público y por eso se agradece que productoras como Last Tour International apuesten por bandas que realmente merecen un reconocimiento y seguimiento incondicional. Al final del concierto las chicas accedieron a darnos una entrevista, la cual colgaremos durante el día de hoy (No, nos les preguntamos sobre Nirvana, ya vale no?). Tambien pudimos grabar la mayoría de temas del show, y estamos subiendolos al youtube, asi que en lugar de escribir mas sobre el show, pueden ustedes mismos dar fé de lo acontecido. Ah, mencionamos que conseguimos uno de los setlists? Tambien tenemos algunas imágenes del show, lo tenemos todo, esperemos lo disfruten!

SUNFEST 2010: Review

April 28th began in a bittersweet fashion. The excitement was palpable on the way to West Palm beach for two days full of music and good times. Just as reference let me say that Soyprensa’s headquarters in the U.S. are located in Miami which is proximately one hour and forty minutes away from West Palm Beach. It was just before half of the way when the news broke out, the Flaming Lips were canceling their performance on the Sunfest due to an emergency in which Steve Drozd had to be rushed to the hospital. TOTAL BUMMER. The flaming Lips were the main reason for many fans to buy tickets to this festival. Now, the anger that you are reading doesn’t have anything to do with the festival, or with the band, it just pain sucked and i had to put it in this article somewhere. So anyway, we scratched covering the second day when we heard the news (Sorry ZZ Top fans). After the initial shock, however, we ponied up and went for the opening day which actually had a pretty decent line up.
The first stop after getting to the festival was These United States. This is a band from Washington D.C. and they play a really good style of rock, mixing classic, indie and southern rock. The band played at 5 in the afternoon and sadly the crowd was just a handful of people at that time. The band seemed to not really care and they put a great performance and as a first time listener , I can safely say that their music wasn’t bad at all.

Next, after an hour break, we went to check out Constellations. Constellations, along with These United States, are up and coming bands that have been touring for most of the year and will be performing in big stages later this summer such as Lollapalooza. Constellation’s music consisted in a mix of hip hop, rock and funk, not my favorite mix but the crowd seemed to dig them. Other than making me fall in love with one of the band’s background singers, the band offered nothing new and their set was a little monotonous.

When the constellation’s were done with their set a bigger crowd gathered in the Tire Kingdom stage (the other one was the Bank of America stage. so much for indie music festivals huh?) to wait for the great We Are Scientist. The band from California took the stage the crowd finally seemed like a music festival crowd. The band started at eight on the dot and went into a high energy, punkish guitars and full sound that are characteristic of We are Scientists. After the fist couple of songs the audience was red hot and the band got more comfortable on stage with their comedic antics. They even poked fun at the Sunfest by saying that every time they banter between songs they were required by the festival to plug a different product. They played for an hour and a half, but sadly a big chunk of the crowd left because they were scheduled to play until 9: 30 and Weezer started to play at 9 on the other stage…bad timming.
At 9 P.M. Weezer took the stage, after the worst introduction by two very annoying local DJs, they launched into Hash Pipe and followed with Troublemaker and Surf Wax America to kick off their set. Not too shabby. Weezer played hit after hit and some people were really into it. Rivers Cuomo did his best to be a lead singer by putting aside his functions as a guitar player and he actually did pretty good. They did get in the set a couple of their new song from the not-so-great Ratitude, but mostly their set consisted in an abundance of songs from the blue album, Maladroit, and well known singles such as Beverly Hills and Island in the Sun in which Cuomo played all the instruments by looping them and making the crowd sing the very famous “Hip Hip”. One of the most memorable and eclectic moments of the night came when after the first encore break Weezer covered MGMT’s Kids with an insert of Lady Gaga’s Pocker face in the middle of the song, with Cuomo sporting a blond long hair wig. The band Sign off with Buddy Holly sending all concert goers home happy.

It is hard for bands to come to South Florida since Florida’s panhandle is very out of the way from the rest of the country. Hundreds of times we have seen bands map their world tours and hundreds of times we have been left disappointed to see the schedule cities list with ours omitted. It’s a sad thing for the music fans in this part of the country.
But as all sad stories this one brings some lights among the shadows, enter the good people at West Palm Beach’s Sunfest. Taking off where Langerado dropped the ball last year, the Sunfest is bringing some of the biggest rock acts to our state. Since 1982 the West Palm Beach music festival has been entertaining Floridians and visitors that are not only looking for great bands to check out, but also for the wonderful art exhibits and great food.
Sunfest 2010, taking place from April 28th to May 2nd, is looking all kind of good. Not only will be taking place in the beautiful waterfront of West Palm Beach, but it will bring two of the biggest acts in rock music. During the opening night, Weezer will be playing. Rivers Cuosmo and company will bring their melodies and catchy guitars to Florida after a hiatus of more than 4 years when they were promoting their album Make Believe. Now, after two more albums under their belt, the veteran rock band is ready to rock Floridians once more.
The main dish for me comes during the second night of the festival. The Flaming Lips from Oklahoma will be performing. The Flips are a great psycodelic rock band that put so many props in their concerts that makes them unforgettable. I’ve seen this band four times in the past, and can’t wait to see them at this year’s Sunfest. Nice grab Sunfest! One bummer is, though, that the Flips are going to be conflicting with rock and roll legends ZZ Top. I’ll try to catch them both somehow.

Record Store Day

Se viene el día de las tiendas de disco, una inciativa promovida por Chris Brown y que fué fundada en el 2007 por Eric Levin, Michael Kurtz, Carrie Colliton, Amy Dorfman, Don Van Cleave y Brian Poehner. Su misión es celebrar la música y reivindicar a las tiendas de disco independientes. Este evento se celebra por todo el mundo (aunque la mayor parte de eventos se realizá en USA). Para este día, se preparan diversos eventos, como lanzamientos de ediciones especiales en vinilo o discos, performances de artistas, DJs, firma de discos y mas. Metallica inauguró el día de las tiendas de discos en Rasputin Music, en San Francisco, en el 2008 y desde entonces, este día se celebra cada tercer sábado del mes de Abril.

Este año tienen una programación que incluye a los Smashing Pumkings, quienes presentarán su nuevo single en directo desde Amoeba Music en Hollywood, CA. Tambien habrán actuaciones de Slash, Against Me!, Alice in Chains, Yo La Tengo y muchos mas.

Lollapalooza 2010

The summer of music festivals in the U.S. is officially on its way with California’s Coachella kicking it off this next weekend. Here in SOYPRENSA we get very excited about this time of the year, not only here in the U.S., but in Europe as well. This year SOYPRENSA will be bringing you full coverage of some of this festivals via tweeter and doing reviews of these great shows.
Our first target here in the United States is Perry Farrell’s Lollapalooza. Lollapalooza will take place at the Grant Park in Chicago, Illinois on the weekend of August 6th to the 8th. Known as one of the most respected and longest running festival in the country, running since 1991 and being reborn in 2003 due to a hiatus from 1997 to 2003 (Probably due to Limp Bizkit and Creed’s best efforts to destroy music), the festival has been the platform for bands such as The Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, The Red Hot Chilly Peppers and Nine Inch Nails.
This year Lolla’s line up can make other festivals jealous because it has it all, a big band reuniting, hipster’s number one band, up and comers indie music bands, bona fide alternative stars and Lady GaGa. The announcement if Lady GaGa as one of this year’s headliners stirred controversy and was quickly defended by Perry Farrell in an interview for Rolling Stone, Farrell said :

“Lady Gaga represents to me the music industry today. She’s a good representation of where it’s at and where everybody’s trying to get to. If you look at the Grammys, it looked like everybody was trying to catch up to Lady Gaga. We just see the vision of Lady Gaga in Chicago in Grant Park surrounded by all those beautiful buildings—we all just thought that it would be an epic performance… She had a real interest in doing it as well because she felt like we had given her a break to go into the world of legitimate music, you know not just pop.”

Anyway, she’ll be headlining along with Green Day and the returning Soundgarden. However, personally, I believe that the substance of this festival lies on the sub-headliners The Strokes and the Arcade fire. The rest of the line up looks strong and diverse.
